Goal: understand the basics and find the right official help route.

Good to know

Dogs in Sweden must be marked and registered in the Swedish Board of Agriculture’s dog register. Source 1
-
Cats must also be marked and registered. Cats born before 1 January 2008 do not have to meet this requirement. Source 2
-
The registration needs to be updated, for example when the owner changes or contact details change. Source 1 Source 2
-
Dogs must be kept under control in nature; from 1 March to 20 August they must be prevented from running loose. Source 3
-
In practice a lead is almost always needed during the sensitive period; local rules may also apply. Source 3
Three steps to get started
-
Check marking and registration.
-
Update relevant changes.
-
Read the rules for the place; use a lead when control is not enough.
A practical checklist to try. It does not add any legal requirements.
Important distinctions
Rules about leads do not work the same way in every situation. This does not replace a vet checking your animal. The authority may charge a registration fee. Integrera does not register anything for you.
Practice question
Show the right answer and explanation
A. Keep control and prevent the dog from disturbing wild animals.
The duty of supervision applies all year round.
This question is practice, not a test. Answers are not saved.

Getting an animal and long-term responsibility. Think about the responsibility before you buy, and spot warning signs of an unreliable seller.A big responsibility
An animal needs you every day for many years. As an animal owner, it is your responsibility to meet the animal's basic needs. Think about time, money, housing and travel before you decide.
Buy a dog safely
A puppy born in Sweden may leave its mother at the earliest when it is 8 weeks old. It must be checked by a vet no more than 7 days before the sale.
How to do it
- Do not buy on impulse. Always find out where the dog comes from.
- Meet the puppy with its mother and siblings at their home.
- Check that the mother is in Hundregistret (the Swedish dog register) if the puppy was born in Sweden.
- Ask to see ID documents and vet certificates before you decide.
- Ask for a written purchase contract with the seller's name, personal identity number, address and phone number.
Warning signs
- You cannot meet the dog where it lives.
- The seller wants to meet in a car park or at a petrol station.
- You talk to one person, but you meet another.
- The seller promises that the papers will come later.
- The puppy seems ill.
- The dog has docked ears or tail. This is banned in Sweden.
Important: Smuggled dogs can carry serious diseases, for example rabies. Never buy a dog if the papers are missing or look strange.
