Gender equality in everyday life
What gender equality means in Sweden and how it shows at work, at home and in the family.
Gender equality in everyday life. What gender equality means in Sweden and how it shows at work, at home and in the family. What is gender equality?
Gender equality means that women and men should have the same rights, duties and opportunities. The goal is that everyone has the same power to shape society and their own lives.
Tip: When people talk about an even split between women and men, they usually mean that no group is more than 60 percent or less than 40 percent.
Differences that still exist
- Women earn less than men on average.
- Women still do more of the unpaid work at home and the care of children and relatives.
- Women and men are subjected to different types of violence, to different extents.
Gender equality in the family
- Share the housework: cleaning, cooking, laundry and contact with school and health care.
- Both parents have the right to parental benefit. 90 days are reserved for each parent and cannot be passed to the other.
- Both have the right to their own income, their own money and their own decisions about their life.
- Boys and girls should have the same chances at school, in their free time and at home.
