Traffic and travel

Start with the bicycle: the right equipment and rules make traffic easier to understand.

Goal: understand the basics and find the right official help route.

Good to know

  • A bicycle must have a brake and a bell.

  • When cycling in the dark, lights and reflectors are required.

  • Children and young people under 15 must wear a helmet when cycling or riding as a passenger on a bicycle.

  • A cycle lane should normally be used if there is one; there are exceptions.

Three steps to get started

  1. Check the brake and the bell.

  2. Check the front light, rear light and reflectors before riding in the dark.

  3. Read the rules for the vehicle and the place you use.

A practical checklist to try. It does not add any legal requirements.

Important distinctions

This does not cover all traffic rules. Tickets, driving licences, winter tyres and electric vehicles need their own up-to-date rules.

Practice question

What must an ordinary bicycle always have?
Show the right answer and explanation

A. A brake and a bell.

The Swedish Transport Agency lists both a brake and a bell.

This question is practice, not a test. Answers are not saved.

  1. Walking in traffic and safe crossings Free 4 sections

Where you should walk, how you cross the road, and who must give way at a pedestrian crossing.

Who counts as a pedestrian in traffic?

In the traffic rules, you are a pedestrian when you walk on foot. But the same rules also apply to several other groups. It is good to know this, because it affects where you may be and who must give way to you.

    • You who ride roller skis, roller skates or a scooter.
    • You who walk and push a bicycle, moped or motorcycle.
    • You who push a pram or a wheelchair.
    • You who drive a wheelchair yourself at walking speed.
Where should you walk: pavement, verge or road?

Use the pavement or the verge, which is the edge outside the solid line. If there is no pavement or verge, you may walk on the cycle path or the road.

When you walk on the verge, the road or a shared walking and cycling path, walk as far to the left as you can. Then you can see the cars that come towards you. On a pavement, path, trail or exercise track there is no rule about which side to walk on. There, everyone should show consideration.

How to cross the road safely

Cross the road at a pedestrian crossing if there is one. If there is not, look carefully and walk straight across the road. If you can, cross at a junction, and do not put traffic in danger.

There are two kinds of pedestrian crossings. At controlled crossings, traffic is controlled by traffic lights or by the police. At uncontrolled crossings, there are no traffic lights. Drivers must give way to you there when you walk. So they must let you go first.

Important: Giving way does not mean you can walk out without looking. You must think about how far away the vehicles are and how fast they are going. Drivers do not have to give way to someone who cycles over an uncontrolled crossing. Push the bicycle, and then you count as a pedestrian.

Reflectors help you be seen in the dark

For a large part of the year, it gets dark early in Sweden. Wearing a reflector is a simple and cheap way to lower the risk of being hit by a vehicle. Reflectors are seen best if you put them low on your legs and arms.

Tip: Hang a reflector on every jacket and bag that your family uses. Then it is always with you.
