In danger? If there is danger to life, property or the environment: call 112. Do not wait for an app or a website.

Good to know

  • 112 is for acute danger to life, property or the environment. Source 1

  • 114 14 is for non-urgent police matters; 1177 is for healthcare advice. Source 1

  • 113 13 gives information about major accidents and crises. Source 1

  • The Swedish Civil Defence agency recommends preparing for at least one week, if you can. Have food, water, a radio and a way to keep warm. Source 2

  • You can start with small steps if you cannot arrange a whole week of preparedness. Source 2

Three steps to get started

  1. Write down important numbers and what they are for.

  2. Go through water, food, heating and information in case of power cuts.

  3. Follow the responsible authorities; do not share unconfirmed rumours.

A practical checklist to try. It does not add any legal requirements.

Important distinctions

112 is not only for danger to life. Preparing for a week is advice, not a promise about when help will come. Do not wait for an app in immediate danger.

  1. 112, 114 14, 113 13 and 1177 Free 5 sections

Four numbers that are good to know by heart, and which one to call in different situations.

    When should you call 112?

112 is the emergency number. Call when there is a serious danger to life, property or the environment. It can be a sudden illness, a fire or a crime that is happening right now.

SOS Alarm (the company that answers emergency calls) answers. They speak Swedish and English. If there is time, they can use an interpreter. The call is free of charge.

    • Someone is very ill or hurt.
    • There is a fire.
    • A crime is happening or has just happened.
    • You have had a wildlife accident (a crash with an animal) in traffic.
    • Through 112 you can also reach, among others, Giftinformationscentralen (the Poison Information Centre), sea rescue, mountain rescue and the on-duty priest.

Important: Only call 112 in an emergency. If it is not urgent, use one of the other numbers.

When should you call 114 14 for the police?

114 14 is the police number for matters that are not urgent. This can be to give a tip or to report a crime that is not happening now. The number is open 24 hours a day, every day.

First you reach a voice that asks what the matter is about. The people who answer speak Swedish and English. 114 14 is not free. The price depends on your phone plan. You can also report many crimes directly on polisen.se.

Important: The police may ask you to identify yourself with BankID (a Swedish digital ID), but only when you have called 114 14 yourself. Never when someone calls you and says they are the police.

    What is 113 13?

113 13 is a number for information about big accidents and crises in Sweden. Call here when you want to know what has happened or what you should do. Do not call here when you need help at once.

    When should you call 1177?

1177 is a national number for health care advice. You can call at any time, day and night. A nurse checks your symptoms, gives you advice, and tells you where you can go if you need care.

Important: If it is a life-threatening condition, you must always call 112, not 1177.

Foreign phone number or trouble speaking on the phone
    • 114 14 from abroad or a foreign mobile: +46 77 114 14 00.
    • 113 13 from abroad or a foreign mobile: +46 77 33 113 13.
    • 1177 from a phone registered in another country: +46 771 1177 00.
    • If you have trouble hearing or speaking, you can use texttelefoni.se, bildtelefoni.net or teletal.se to reach 112 and 114 14, among others.

Tip: Write the numbers on a piece of paper and put it on the fridge. Then everyone in the family can find them, even if the phone battery is empty.
